Are you making plans for the summer? Most of us have been waiting for this long dreary spring to end and summer to break forth. We love the longer days, the warmer weather, and the opportunity to be outside and enjoy mother nature.
But what often happens, and is happening to me as we speak, is that our days get filled with activities without our even getting the opportunity to plan some rest and relaxation. It seems that everyone has the same idea and plan to pack as much fun as possible into June, July, and August before the weather changes once again.
My calendar is filling up with celebrations, cook-outs, and parties and I haven’t much time left for a vacation. I better decide pretty quick how it is I want to enjoy my summer. And you had better too. Before it all gets decided for you!
The bible has plenty to say about how we spend our leisure time. It also addresses the fact that we need rest. Real rest. Not rest at a party. Not rest at a cook-out. But pure, uninterrupted rest. The kind that comes from worship, praying, and spending quiet time with God.
Jesus Himself told us, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
As you are revving up your calendar to enjoy every minute of the brief summer months, remember to go to Jesus for some real rest and rejuvenation. Let Him fill you with His love and grace. And allow the Holy Spirit within you an opportunity to guide you to peace through Christ.
My goal this summer is that each time my tan gets darker, my time with Jesus is increased. The SUN and the SON are my two favorite things. When I combine them, it is pure joy. May you find your rest and joy in the Son this summer too. Peace.
