Do you know the definition of the word “Hasty?” I do. It means acting with excessive speed or insufficient consideration. I have determined that I have lived my life in a constant state of being hasty.
And in so doing, I have created a great deal of problems for myself and Hank, if I’m being honest. The most recent episode is me breaking my ankle on a recent Sunday afternoon. Because my blood pressure is now low, when my feet fall asleep, I don’t feel them tingle. But I jumped right up out of my recliner onto a dead asleep foot and it rolled grotesquely. One moment of hastiness and weeks of inconvenience.
And this is just a large incident in a series of smaller ways throughout every day that I am simply too hasty. So I have vowed to myself, God, and Hank that I would work on this immediately! If I don’t, I might find the word hasty on my gravestone!
“Here Lies Pastor Lisa. She was hasty one too many times!”
Believe it or not, the Bible does speak to us about being hasty. I guess I just never saw it before. Yet, Proverbs 21:5 says, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to want”.
Did you notice that the writer said the “plans” of the diligent are a good thing. Being hasty is using ‘insufficient consideration’ before acting. No planning. Just acting. Christianity calls us to be intentional about our faith in every way. Being hasty in our daily lives, in our faith, in our speaking, in our thinking…it can hurt us and others.
I give you permission to remind me if I am being hasty in the coming days. The broken ankle will be a good reminder for a while. But after that, I may need help remembering once again that hastiness is not a virtue.
May God give grant me patience as I heal. Peace to you all.
