Recently, I have personally experienced a great deal of stress, trouble, and strife. And on top of my own calamities, I have heard from so many of you about your own stresses, troubles, and strife. It seems no one is immune! And it can be overwhelming to stack all of our troubles up and look at them like a mountain that can’t be moved. When we view that mountain, it can feel like despair and hopelessness because of our inability to enact change. Those who do not know the saving grace of our loving God face mountains like that every single day.
But even when we DO know God, our troubles can cause us to question His ways. We know that if God is FOR us, we do not have to fear. But we still have pain, worry, and doubt to deal with. We still question God’s ways and wonder why this or why that.
What do we say to those who need to know that God cares? I recently heard the answer. And it came from the pastor of my mother’s church. She has a saying, “If it isn’t good, God isn’t done.” And that saying comes from:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
Romans 8:28
If things in your life are not good…God is not done working. And God’s work is not futile. He has a plan. God is working to accomplish something that will be good for you. But what is good?
The promise that God works all things together for good does not mean that all things, taken by themselves, are good. Some things and events are decidedly bad. But God is able to work them together for good. He sees the big picture; He has a master plan.
No matter our circumstances, God is working things in us according to His good and wise design. We must trust God and His way so that we grow into who He wants us to be. Our decision to align our will with God’s and to always trust Him is the surest way to what is “good”. As believers, we can’t lose hope. We must remember that any trouble we face will produce a good that lasts forever and ever.
So next time you feel the tug of “why God?” remember these words:
If it isn’t good, God isn’t done.
