When I was a kid, one of my favorite cartoons was “The Jetsons.” The space age technology was alluring even as it was created in a fictional time and place. And yet today, we find some of that space age technology coming to fruition right before our eyes.
One such invention is the self-driving car. There is a great deal of talk, and worry, about self-driving cars coming on the market. I know for me, the idea of letting the car do the driving while I sit and watch would be too much to bear. I would flinch and jolt and go for the brake. It would simply be very difficult to trust that this huge piece of machinery would make the best and right choices in traffic. My experience with cars is that when mistakes are made, the impact is deadly.
And yet having faith in God is like riding in His self-driving car. And the key to being able to relax and trust is in our knowledge of the driver, Jesus. Because even though we can’t see Him, He is the one that God wants us to submit to.
In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he writes a prayer to them in chapter three praying for them to be able to let Christ be in charge so that they can be faithful disciples. Paul writes in Ephesians 3:16-19, “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
What a beautiful prayer. Take the time to read it again, slowly. Line by line. Paul prays that we would trust in God that he would provide the faith we need through the Holy Spirit. Paul is saying, in his wordy way, that we should have such a trusting personal relationship with Jesus that we allow Him control over our lives in every way.
Can you let Jesus drive your life even though you can’t see him? Is your relationship with Him so close that you trust His guidance and leading in your life? It’s not always easy and there may be some moments where you jolt and flinch and want to hit the brakes. But unlike technology, you can trust God with your life. Have Peace.
